Family Liaison in Environmental Health

This one day course is designed for Environmental Health Officers whose role may bring them into contact with people whose loved ones have died in circumstances which have triggered an investigation and/or a prosecution. It is important that their managers also attend this training to ensure that their staff are properly supported during this work and are performing the role within ethical and practical guidelines. This course is designed to be run ‘in-house’ but in the present Covid-19 situation courses are also being offered online, which has proved to be very successful.

Training Course Details

This one day course is for anyone working in an Environmental Health context. This may include staff of the Health and Safety Executive and of Local Authority Environmental Health departments who are investigating a fatality and are having on-going contact with the family of the person who has died.

The course will help to prepare officers to deal with families in a sensitive way and will deal with the many practical aspects of working with families whilst carrying out an investigation. It will present information about the ethical and procedural requirements to be taken into account whilst doing this work, information about the effects of the grieving process and Psychological First Aid skills in supporting family members during the investigation process and ensuring that officers and their colleagues are well cared for and supported.

Course objectives

At the conclusion of the training delegates will be able to:

  • Role and responsibilities of Family Liaison Officers (FLO) and working with the police FLO
  • A Protocol and Ethics for Family Liaison in an Environmental Health context
  • Diversity issues and the grieving process
  • Identifying the family and dealing with their concerns
  • Giving information to families in an appropriate way
  • Typical reactions to the traumatic death of a loved one
  • Using Psychological First Aid skills in investigation and support activities
  • A knowledge of other support agencies and when it may be appropriate to refer
  • Managing the exit strategy
  • Managing FLOs own stress levels and ensuring they are properly supported

Organising Training

This one day training course is designed to be run ‘In-House’ on behalf of Local Authority Environmental Health Departments or the Health And Safety Executive.  However, in the present Covid 19 situation, it is also being offered as an ‘On-Line’ option, using any of the usual video conferencing platforms.  The course has always received excellent feedback.
